Through extensive site analysis, community interviews and a vision to
create a dynamic park that resonates with the spectacular island site,
its landmark ruins structures and distinctive landforms, an award-winning
conceptual master plan for Roosevelt Island was developed with The Trust
for Public Land. The plan was derived from the goals and principles set by the Advisory Council, existing site conditions and Roosevelt Island’s unique heritage.
The plan developed its strength from the diversity of accessible habitats
from open meadows, shoreline nesting sites to streams and waterfalls
through planted woodlands. The Park design capitalizes on the existing
topographical land formations; it restores a native landscape palette
to the site and provides the visitors with controlled access to these rich
habitats.
The final plan, Wild Gardens/Green Rooms embraces the spectacular island site, its landmark ruins and structures and distinctive landforms while creating an exciting series of landscaped rooms, overlooks and event spaces. The plan was revised to include the FDR Memorial designed by Louis Kahn and Harriet Pattison when it was announced that funding had finally been secured for the spectacular memorial.
This project is the recipient of the 2005 New York Chapter American Society of Landscape Architects, Honor Award for Master Planning
